No poetry in July or August!

Each session is unique in the sense that we have a different theme which may involve a particular poet or topic. Members bring along contributions in the form of a poem and/or some information about the poet or topic and these contributions are read out to the group and sometimes further discussion evolves. In this way everyone contributes, should they so wish, though there is no compulsion, and sometimes one or two are quite content to listen, which is fine. This helps to retain the informality, friendliness and humour within the group, an instinct the leaders have sought to foster from the group’s inception in order to encourage a wide spectrum of members. Themes can range from a relatively serious and brief study of poets both famous (and occasionally infamous) to more frivolous sessions (for instance we have looked at limericks, origins of nursery rhymes and monologues in recent times) Although we have never as yet delved into composition this does not necessarily mean that this will always be the case since there are certainly several members capable of producing verse. Another important aspect is arranging for local poets to visit us and we try to incorporate at least one of these into each year of meetings.
